DRILLED DOOR HANDLES

DRILLED DOOR HANDLES...

for my 72 STR 002 i have decided to retro fit early SWB

Handles that i have drilled & had re -chrome plated...

they are one of the many unique touches to the car.

here is my step by step process

a few basic tools are needed...

any door handle will work ,i decided to go with the 65-67 swb handle as i like the slender profile .

plus its just a bit unusual on a LWB car.

i removed the key lock cylinder prior to the following steps

1-i made a templete with a 1 " spaceing

2- i set the door handle in a press & made my piolt punch holes

3- with my holes made, I marked them for clear visabilty.

4- i then mounted the door handle in a jig on my drill press

& secured my 1/4 drill bit.

here the jig becomes helpful in centering the door handle,

which  is not parrel in shape & has a slight curve.

with a little oil i am ready to drill.

REMEMBER TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE CORRECT POTION FIRST &WEAR GOGGLES !

5- AFTER I HAVE DRILLED ALL 5 HOLES I AM READY

FOR THE COUNTER SINK BIT.

This bit is the most difficult due to the curve of the door handle.

i feel it gives the handle a "finished look & feel" & is worth the extra effort.

TOOLS FROM THE JOB.

I DID AN EXTRA SET FOR MY 67 S -R INSPIRED CAR,

WHILST I WAS AT THE DRILL PRESS....

6- THE NEXT STEP IS TO SEND OUT FOR CHROME PLATING...

it is always good to get shinny chrome bits back from the plater...

next i will re install the key lock cylinder...

7-add rubber gasket & test fit in the car.....

a small cost to pay for a COOL unique detail ,,,

1 of the many small pieces that i add to my builds that hopefully make  A good car GREAT :)

all told it took & some  time,Effort  &  a little money.

the finished door handle was well worth the work.

the sense of achievement IS PRICELSS...

go ahead & try it for your self,,,,

every time you open the car door ........

you will be glad you did it..

THE ABOVE DOOR HANDLE IS NOT YET FINISHED.

I STILL NEED TO INSTALL THE KEY LOCK CYLINDER

it just looked too good not to do a test fit...
